Everyone agrees that housing is no longer affordable, but very few agree on the right solutions; more and more New Zealanders are graduating with world class degrees, yet secure jobs are becoming scarce; parents and grandparents worry that the New Zealand they knew is no more.
In this BWB Winter Series panel, three leading commentators discuss how economic and social changes are reshaping - and perhaps replacing - the old order. Could Trump happen here? Public science is facing a paradox. On the one hand, humankind has never known so much, nor had such easy access to knowledge. On the other hand, the status of knowledge seems increasingly precarious. Experts are dismissed as vested interests. Some are even saying that we live in a 'post-truth' era, where politicians are no longer accountable to reality. Who cares anymore what the experts say?
Join Shaun Hendy (Silencing Science), Director of Te Pūnaha Matatini, University of Auckland; Jane Kelsey (The FIRE Economy), Professor of Law at the University of Auckland; and Mike Joy (Polluted Inheritance), Senior Lecturer in Ecology and Environmental Science at Massey University, as they discuss the status of knowledge today.
The discussion will be chaired by Radio New Zealand journalist Megan Whelan, founding contributor to the award-winning programme The Wireless.
